Lisa Ringel and Peter Bayer were in Bure (France) for a meeting with project partners from ANDRA and AFRY and to visit the Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory (URL). The Meuse/Haute-Marne URL is operated by ANDRA as a research site to investigate issues relating to nuclear waste repositories. One aspect of the safety assessment that is being investigated by our working group is the characterization of the excavation-induced fracture network with pneumatic tomography. For this purpose, we use a 3D discrete fracture network (DFN) model to describe the hydraulic and geometric properties of the excavation zone.
