Monument risks from groundwater extremes

Monuments such as historical buildings have survived for centuries, but can they cope with the severely changing weather and climate conditions of today? We are especially interested in the role of drifting hydrogeological conditions as a consequence of climate change and hydrological extremes. In our current focus are damages to churches and other monuments observed in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. We investigate the impacts of floods and droughts on groundwater levels, chemistry and aquifer parameters on these monuments. Our insights are fundamental for developing protective actions for damages of similar events in the future.
